Deck Officer Class VIII

The Deck Officer Class VIII examina is the foundation for all professional maritime traffic in Sweden. If you wish to work on a commercial vessel, this course is a mandatory requirement. You will learn advanced navigation that extends beyond the archipelago, radar technology, radio communication, and extensive safety training, including fire drills, water survival, and vessel abandonment. Our instructors provide a comprehensive and highly engaging course that caters to both those aiming for a career in maritime traffic and those simply seeking to deepen their knowledge of seamanship.

The course is intensive, spanning five days, with each day covering a new topic. It includes a substantial amount of theory as well as practical exercises such as radar operation, radio drills, and life raft climbing. While there are no formal prerequisites aside from age, having a Inshore Yachtmaster (Förarintyg) gives you a very valuable head start.

With a Deck Officer Class VIII (DOVIII) certification, you are qualified to serve as captain on a commercial vessel under 20 gross tons (approximately 15 meters) in inland waters. Our skilled instructors will guide you through all of this. A common combination is Deck Officer Class VIII and Engineer Officer Class VIII (EOVIII), the latter allowing you to operate vessels with larger engines. It is also common to take the Fast Craft Operating course, which qualifies you to operate high-speed vessels commercially.

At our facility in Stocksund, we have everything on-site, allowing us to conduct night navigation and fire drills with ease. Since this course provides professional certification, it’s common for us to encounter our former students in the archipelago after they’ve secured jobs.
