Radar Diploma

The Radar Diploma teaches you how to navigate in fog, darkness, or other forms of reduced visibility. If you wish to feel secure at sea, even when visibility is limited, and still be able to avoid other vessels, having radar on your ship is essential. Radar is an instrument now used on nearly all commercial vessels, as well as many recreational boats. The radar certification provides you with all the knowledge needed to skillfully utilize the instrument to its full potential.

During the course, we cover radar technology, exploring the mechanics behind radar operation. We also delve into anti-collision systems, radar plotting, broadband and pulse radar, and much more. While the course is not a formal requirement for recreational boaters, it is highly recommended for those who have radar onboard. The radar certification, however, aligns with the radar content in the Deck Officer Class VIII certification for individuals looking to further develop their skills and pursue a career in professional maritime operations.

Our instructors also teach you how to use radar in conjunction with other instruments, such as GPS and AIS. We also review how radar can be an active contributor in locating distressed vessels using SART and Racon systems. As part of the course, we conduct a practical exercise onboard one of our boats, where you will apply the theoretical knowledge you have acquired. This exercise is included in the radar certification examination. You will also plan the practical session yourself during the course, allowing you to gain a real sense of how such scenarios unfold.

It can be intimidating to navigate when you cannot see, but with a radar certification, you will develop the sharp skills needed to navigate through situations that would otherwise be impossible without the instrument.
