SRC, Short Range Certificate has replaced the former VHF certification. This certification is a formal requirement for the international use of a VHF radio. VHF radios are currently used on the majority of the world’s vessels, both in leisure boating and commercial traffic. The ability to communicate with other ships at the press of a button is invaluable, which is why this is something we, as well as the maritime sector in general, highly recommend.
With a VHF radio, you can communicate with any vessel, regardless of its type or size, as long as you are within range. A common rule of thumb is that you can reach as far as the eye can see over open water during daylight hours, though the range may decrease slightly within archipelagos due to surrounding objects. This also means that in emergency situations, you can quickly and easily call for help.
Our instructors will teach you radio technology, the structure of radio communication, channel functions, and, of course, how to request assistance when necessary. During the course, you will also have the opportunity to practice using the radio, simulate various scenarios, and observe and listen to real-world examples. After the course, you will feel confident in using the radio and communicating with other vessels, though it is natural to feel a bit nervous the first time.
Another feature common in our modern world is DSC (Digital Selective Calling), a method that allows you to quickly send a digital call without having to speak on the radio. DSC is always used in emergencies but can also be employed to contact a specific vessel without others hearing the call. During the day, we will review and simulate the use of DSC.
If you plan to work at sea, the SRC is a requirement and is also part of the Deck Officer Class VIII examina, a commercial qualification for those operating in professional traffic, or for those who simply wish to expand their knowledge further.
The certification is recognized internationally, meaning it is valid worldwide.
